Playoff seller guide · NBA & NHL Round 2

When a series clinches, the clock starts. The 48 hours after are the highest-leverage window of your postseason.

Round 2 inventory reprices within 48 hours of every Round 1 clincher — the same four forces, every round, every year. This guide covers the mechanism, the five-day STH playbook, and the Game 7 dynamic, with the May 2026 window preserved as a worked example of how fast it moves.

Why Round 2 inventory reprices in 48 hours

When a Round 1 series ends, four things change at once for the surviving team’s Round 2 home games:

The clincher window: buyer attention and price leverage around a Round 1 clincher A curve of buyer attention and price leverage across the days around a Round 1 clincher. Flat before the clinch, a sharp spike through the 48 hours after, then decay as second-wave season-ticket-holder inventory lands on the market in days two through four. The shaded band marks the 48-hour peak window. Verdict: list into the 48-hour window, before the second wave of inventory lands. Buyer attention & price leverage around a clincher THE 48-HOUR WINDOW second-wave STH inventory lands, days 2–4 clincher +2 days +4 +7 series still live List into the 48 hours — before the second wave lands.
The window that decides your round. Buyer attention peaks for roughly 48 hours after a clincher — travel buyers, media coverage, matchup evaluation all at once — then second-wave STH listings arrive and price discovery slows. Early listings catch the wave; late ones compete with it.

1. The matchup is now a known commodity.

Pre-clincher, Round 2 home tickets are priced against a hypothetical opponent. Post-clincher, the buyer pool can finally evaluate the actual matchup — fan travel, rivalry intensity, broadcast slot, star matchups. That changes price more than any single variable in playoff resale.

2. Travel buyers enter the market.

A meaningful share of conference semifinal demand comes from out-of-town fans of the visiting team. They can’t book flights and hotels until the matchup is set. The 24-72 hour window after a Round 1 clincher is when those buyers concentrate their shopping.

3. STHs of the advancing team suddenly hold extra inventory.

Most playoff STH packages auto-roll round-by-round. STHs who weren’t planning to attend Round 2 (they bought the package for the regular season and Round 1) are now sitting on Round 2 home games they didn’t expect to have. That inventory hits the market within days.

4. Buyer attention is concentrated.

ESPN, regional sports media, and team broadcasts spend the next 48 hours analyzing the new matchup. That’s the peak buyer-attention window of the entire round. After that, attention migrates to the other live series and price discovery slows.

NBA vs NHL Round 2 dynamics: where they diverge

DimensionNBA Round 2NHL Round 2
Series lengthBest-of-7, typically 5–7 gamesBest-of-7, can run shorter
Home games per teamUp to 4Up to 4
Game 7 premiumHighest single-game ticket of the roundHighest single-game ticket of the round
Buyer poolNational + regional travelMore regional, fewer cross-country travelers
Premium-section premiumVery high (lower bowl, courtside)Very high (lower bowl, glass)
Travel timingBuyers book day-of-clincher through ~48 hours laterSame window
Late-series price spikeStrong (Game 5+)Strong (Game 5+)

The biggest practical difference: NBA Round 2 has a deeper travel-buyer pool (national audience, marquee market crossover) while NHL Round 2 leans more regional. Both reprice fast on a clincher, but NBA Round 2 prices peak slightly higher in absolute terms in marquee markets.

What STHs of advancing teams should do in the next 5 days

If your team just clinched and you’re holding Round 2 home inventory you don’t plan to use, the playbook is short and time-sensitive.

Day of clincher (or day after)

Triage your inventory. How many home games are you sitting on, in what sections, and which ones do you actually plan to attend? Be honest. The seats you’re “thinking about going to” are seats you’ll end up selling at game-week prices, which are lower than today’s prices on a hot matchup.

Days 1–2 after clincher

List the seats you’re not attending. The 48-hour window after a clincher is when buyer attention is at peak. Listings that go up early get visibility before the second wave of STH inventory hits. Same logic as the NFL schedule release — first prices set the anchor for the round.

Days 3–5

Watch your listings against the broader market. If your seats are clearing, leave them. If they’re sitting, consider whether the issue is price (reprice once, decisively, by 10-15%) or the section (combine adjacent seats into a bundled listing if you have them). Halfway adjustments get ignored at this stage.

Game 7 (if applicable)

This is the single highest-leverage ticket of the entire round. Game 7s clear at multiples of Game 1 because they might not happen — once a series goes to a Game 7, the urgency factor is built in. Don’t list a Game 7 ticket the same way you’d list a Game 2.

What not to do: Don’t fire-sell early-series tickets the day after a clincher because you panicked. Don’t hold late-series tickets all the way to game-week without watching the market. Don’t try to manually maintain listings across a series that’s about to start in 48 hours. Either commit to active management or hand it off.

The Game 7 dynamic, specifically

Game 7s in either league are unusual ticket-pricing situations. Three things converge:

For STHs of teams in Round 2, this is the most important pricing concept to internalize: single-game value is not flat across the four home games of a round. Pricing them the same is leaving money on the table on the late games.

For the full decision logic across every holding situation, see the now-or-wait decision framework.

The May 1, 2026 snapshot: the window, as it actually looked

This guide first ran on May 1, 2026, in the middle of the Round 2 window. The snapshot below — matchup tables, status notes, and prices — is preserved exactly as published, as a worked example of how fast the window moves. Round 2 has since completed; its survivors are playing in the championship round now.

The 2026 NBA and NHL Conference Semifinals tip off this weekend. Round 1 in both leagues has been the most chalk-disrupting in years — the two-time finalist Edmonton Oilers eliminated by Anaheim, the Minnesota Wild winning their first playoff series since 2015, the Timberwolves knocking out the defending-conference Nuggets — and the Round 2 brackets that just locked in are pulling resale prices in directions nobody had set up for at the start of April.

If you’re a season ticket holder of a team that just advanced, this is the highest-leverage 5-day window of your entire postseason. Here’s what’s actually happening, with the matchups and prices that exist as of today, May 1.

The 2026 Round 2 picture as of this morning

NBA — confirmed and pending:

(E1) Pistons / (E8) Magic vs (E4) Cavaliers / (E5) RaptorsBoth first-round series still alive

NBA Conference Semifinals tip-off window: May 2-4, 2026.

NHL — confirmed and pending:

SeriesStatus
Carolina Hurricanes vs Philadelphia FlyersConfirmed. Game 1 in Raleigh, Saturday May 2, 8 p.m. ET
Minnesota Wild vs Colorado AvalancheConfirmed. Wild single-game Round 2 ticket release on sale today (May 1, 4 p.m.)
Anaheim DucksAdvanced (def. Edmonton); Round 2 opponent pending
Sabres-Bruins, Canadiens-Lightning, Golden Knights-MammothRound 1 still in progress

The asymmetry across both leagues — multiple Round 2 brackets already locked while others are still resolving — is the key dynamic. Confirmed series re-priced 48 hours ago. Pending series will reprice within hours of their Round 1 clincher.

Round 2 pricing reality, May 1

These are the prices clearing on the secondary market as of May 1, 2026. They will move fast — both up if a series goes long, down if it ends in 4 games — but this is the floor today:

Matchup (Round 2)Get-in price (home games)Tier-defining seats
Knicks home (if advancing)Highest in NBA postseason — Madison Square Garden Round 2 historically commands the league’s highest single-game premiumLower-bowl can clear into four figures per seat in late-series games
Celtics homeGame 1 starting around $282, later home games starting around $464 at TD GardenPremium club / lower-bowl multiples higher
Hurricanes home (vs Flyers)On sale now via Carolina; secondary market opening 5/1PNC Arena Round 2 is the team’s deepest playoff run in years — premium tier holding firm
Wild home (vs Avalanche)Single-game release today 5/1 at 4 p.m.; first-postseason-since-2015 demand spike incomingGrand Casino Arena premium seats expected to clear materially above face
Conference Semifinals (NBA, general)$150-$500 grandstand, scaling up by team and round position

The Knicks-at-Madison-Square-Garden dynamic is the single most asymmetric resale pricing you’ll find anywhere in either league this round. New York playoff inventory in any round commands the league’s highest premium; second-round at MSG specifically is the kind of ticket that draws national tourism.

The Hurricanes-Flyers and Wild-Avalanche matchups in the NHL are the rare second-round series where both fanbases have been waiting years for this run — Carolina’s deepest postseason in some time, Minnesota’s first series win since 2015. That fanbase psychology shows up directly in resale: STHs who held all season for this moment aren’t motivated sellers, which keeps the floor up.

Frequently asked questions

Why do Round 2 tickets cost more than Round 1?

Three reasons. The pool of remaining teams is half the size, so each surviving team’s home games are now scarcer playoff inventory. The matchups are higher-stakes — winners go to the conference finals. And buyer attention concentrates: media coverage, broadcast windows, and travel planning all narrow to the eight remaining series across both leagues.

When should I list my Round 2 home tickets?

Day of clincher or the day after. The 48 hours after a Round 1 series ends is the peak buyer-attention window for Round 2 inventory. Listings that go up in that window catch the travel-buyer wave; listings that go up later compete with second-wave STH inventory.

Do Round 2 ticket prices drop closer to game day?

For early-series home games (Game 1, Game 2), generally no — buyer demand is strongest in the days right after the matchup is set, and prices hold or climb. For late-series games (Game 5+), prices spike sharply as the series intensifies and Game-7 elimination scenarios firm up. The “late-game discount” pattern that exists for regular-season tickets does not apply to playoff inventory.

How much will my Knicks/Celtics/Hurricanes/Wild Round 2 tickets clear at?

It depends on the section, the specific game number, and how the series shapes up. Today’s snapshot prices: Celtics Game 1 home around $282 to start, later home games around $464; Knicks home premium is the highest in the NBA in any matchup; Hurricanes-Flyers and Wild-Avalanche are both pulling firm regional demand because of historical context (deepest Carolina run in years, first Minnesota series win since 2015). Premium and lower-bowl seats run materially above these figures. We don’t promise specific prices because the market moves daily, but the directional signals are clear.

What if my series is still in Round 1 — should I list Round 2 tickets in advance?

Generally no, unless your team is up 3-1 or better. Pre-clinch listings are priced against a hypothetical matchup, which means the buyer pool is small and the prices are conservative. Wait for the clincher, then list within 48 hours. The exception: if your team is heavily favored and the matchup pool has narrowed to two possibilities (like Celtics-Knicks vs 76ers-Knicks), the Knicks home game can be listed early because Knicks demand is matchup-agnostic.

What’s a Game 7 ticket worth?

Multiples of a Game 1 ticket. Exact multiples depend on how the series has played out — a Game 7 between two evenly-matched marquee teams clears at the highest premium of any ticket in the round. Don’t list a Game 7 with the same pricing logic as Game 1; it’s a different ticket.
